The Unsafe Journal welcomes voices that refuse to be silenced

The Unsafe House exists as a sanctuary for dangerous ideas, confrontational art, and voices that challenge the comfortable conformity of contemporary culture.

We seek provocateurs, heretics, and visionaries willing to descend into uncomfortable territories. If your work makes the mainstream uncomfortable, you've come to the right place.

I. What We Publish

Provocations

Essays and opinion pieces that challenge prevailing narratives, question sacred cows, and dare to think the unthinkable.

800–3000 words

Mythologies

Poetry, fiction, and experimental writing that explores the boundaries between the sacred and profane.

Up to 2000 words

Visual Arts

Photography, digital art, illustrations, and documentation of physical works that embody the Unsafe aesthetic.

II. Submission Guidelines

✎ Written Work

  • Essays and provocations: 800–3000 words
  • Poetry and fiction: Up to 2000 words
  • Format: .doc, .docx, .pdf, or plain text
  • Include a brief bio (2–3 sentences)
  • Links to your existing work (optional)

🎨 Visual Work

  • High resolution JPG or PNG (min. 2000px)
  • Include: title, medium, dimensions, year
  • Series welcome — include artist statement
  • Video: Send Vimeo/YouTube/WeTransfer link
  • RAW files accepted for photography
  • 3D work: Include multiple angles

III. Boundaries

Being "unsafe" is not an excuse for laziness, cruelty, or shock without substance. We reject work that is:

  • Gratuitously offensive without artistic or intellectual merit
  • Direct calls to violence against specific individuals or groups
  • Plagiarized or submitted without proper rights
  • Previously published without disclosure

We reserve the right to edit for clarity and length. We will always consult with authors before making significant changes.

Send your work via email with "Submission" and category in the subject line

Review

Our editors review all submissions within 2–4 weeks

Response

You'll receive a response whether accepted or not

Publication

Accepted work is scheduled and you're credited as original author

Rights & Attribution

We ask for first publication rights only. After publication, all rights revert to you. You retain full ownership and may republish elsewhere with attribution to The Unsafe Journal.

All published work includes clear credit to the original author with optional links to your website or portfolio.
