Introspective Retrospection

Rhythmic sis from France
In circle of friends
Renders youthful scene
With magic at full steam
So full of life
That it cuts like a knife;
Picks days like daisies;
Visits cheese-dairies;
Writes them in diaries.

Ours punk-generation
Don’t need veneration,
But need to express
That we don’t avoid stress.

The bottom line
Is what makes it so fine.
Smileys are not just those five.
It’s a way of life.

Turquoise parakeet
Never missed a beat
For solos increased;
Then diagnosing beast.

That’s way too soon
While still in full bloom;
As our youth was why
We were blinded by
What did qualify.

I’ve had shortcomings
Saying some dumb things.
After unctuous rage
Only wisdom of age
Helps to make right
What causes far-fetched pride.

Self-deceit is not aware
Of pain others share.
It was all there!
It was all there!

About the author
Harry Merry (Harry den Hartog, b. 1971, Rotterdam) is the Dutch singer-songwriter genius who has been producing eccentric art-pop and rock operas since 1996, following a five-year period of isolation with a keyboard in an attic.

Harry is known for his evocative songs about moody bus drivers, teenagers drinking Sandeman and cosy ferry crossings and the adventurous European vacations of a group of Latinas, who encounter train travels, hilltop picnics in Austria and Switzerland, and a wardrobe mishap involving stolen clothes and temporary traditional Austrian men’s wear.

Some fun facts: The lyrics of Harry’s highly anticipated upcoming anthem, “Introspective Retrospection,” are premiered exclusively here in The Unsafe Journal. Harry Merry won The Sina Khani Award 2025. Sina also directed Harry’s 2014 music video for “The Sky Fun Reels and Angelica Kneels.” Have a look.
