Gabriël Kousbroek
“Kringspiratie”
Herman Rudolf Gabriël Kousbroek, born on October 11, 1965, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, is a Dutch illustrator and artist, the son of esteemed writers Rudy Kousbroek and Ethel Portnoy, and brother to the late translator and writer Hepzibah Kousbroek. He studied graphic design and interdisciplinary arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (when it was still prestigious) from 1986 to 1990, though he was expelled in his final year for pursuing multiple disciplines, as happens to the best students. Kousbroek has built a multifaceted career in illustration, comics, painting, and video production, authoring the autobiographical graphic novel “Kousbroek” and contributing to publications such as De Groene Amsterdammer and de Volkskrant, while engaging in projects related to historical narratives like the Holocaust.
Sociëteit De Kring, founded on September 23, 1922, in Amsterdam, masquerades as a vibrant private club for artists, intellectuals, scientists, and those in the cultural sector, but often devolves into an elitist echo chamber for social gatherings, debates, exhibitions, and live performances.
